Maca is an Andean product recognized for its high nutritional value and its healing properties. This powerful root can grow even in the most adverse climates, at more than 4,000 masl, where frost is detrimental to most crops. Its resistance and nutritional value is not a recent discovery, the history of maca goes back 300 million years, from where it has evolved and adapted to the climatic changes of the planet.
The oldest accounts say that the cultivation of maca began in the late stage of the Wanka culture, so that its cultivation intensified in the time of the Incas, especially in the highlands, inhabited by the Collas. From oral tradition, it is known that "Taky Oncoy", as the product was known, would have been the food of the Inca warriors, because at that time, they attributed the benefit of vitality and physical strength, which were necessary for the members of the army. Also, in the Tahuantinsuyo era, this product, in addition to its nutritional properties, caused a hallucinogenic effect in those who consumed it, according to the writer Juan Morales Castillo.
When the Spaniards arrived, according to the chroniclers, they reported that maca grew in hard-to-reach lands and that it was the daily food of the indigenous people, as was bread for the conquerors. But when the Spanish learned about the properties of maca, it was included in the products with which tributes could be paid, and it also served as food for the mares and pigs brought by the Europeans.
Now, maca or "Taky Oncoy" is an important andean product requested by the properties that the Incas discovered in it. Its consumption can be in food or drinks as it can be found very early in some corner of our city.
That is why we mention this prodigious curative and nutritious food that grows in the Pasco, Junín and Huancavelica regions, and the entire central area that has become one of the most productive areas in the country.
