Anemia in Peru

Anemia is a public health problem in Peru that mainly affects children. According to INEI, 40.1% of children aged 6 to 36 months have anemia. Some of the departments with more cases are Puno, Cusco, Huancavelica, Ucayali, Loreto, Junin, Madre de Dios and Pasco.

We all need to consume foods rich in iron, it is important that children under 3 years of age do so, since they are in the crucial stage of child development; adolescent women, in this period menstruation begins; and pregnant women, in order to prepare for childbirth.

These are some of the foods that you can consume to prevent anemia

  1. Red meat. All meats of this type contain generous amounts of heme iron, being rich in protein, folic acid and vitamin B12, so it is a good source of very healthy nutrients.
  2. Nuts. The Spanish Heart Foundation advises to ingest 50 grams daily, also in cases of anemia. Almonds, cashew nuts and pistachios are the ones that provide more quantity.
  3. Spinach. This popular green leafy vegetable is an excellent source of vegetable iron.
  4. Fish. They are also great allies when it comes to keeping iron levels in check. In addition, they provide an extra contribution of omega 3, 'good fats', of vitamins of the group B and of proteins.
  5. Legumes. Legumes help to reduce the risk of heart disease by 14% and also help to restore iron levels and, therefore, to solve or prevent anemia.
  6. Parsley. It helps to raise iron levels, it is advisable to try to include it in all culinary preparations that admit it or as a seasoning for meat and fish.
  7. Beet. This tasty vegetable enriches salads, gives an extra sweet flavor to countless culinary preparations, gives color to juices and is also an important source of iron.
  8. Red Maca. It is a food of high nutritional and biological value, since its varied composition contains proteins, fats, carbohydrates, calcium, cellulose, starches, phosphorus, iodine, iron, vitamin B complex, and vitamin C.
